Passing The Alibaba Torch

Chinese entrepreneur Jack Ma shared an important lesson in leadership when he decided to step down as chairman of Alibaba, the e-commerce company he created. The tech titan revealed Monday that he has started the process of “passing the Alibaba torch” to current chief executive officer Daniel Zhang. Ma said the handover had been a decade in the planning and has helped shape Alibaba into the multibillion-dollar e-commerce giant it is today. “I have put a lot of thought and preparation into this succession plan for ten years. This transition demonstrates that Alibaba has stepped up to the next level of corporate governance.”

The Woman Building Americas Military Machine

This July, Northrop Grumman announced that CEO Wes Bush would step down at the end of the year and be replaced by the first woman to hold that office, current COO Kathy Warden. She will join an elite club of defense contractor CEOs that includes Lockheed Martin’s Marillyn Hewson, General Dynamics’ Phebe Novakovic, and Leanne Caret, who heads Boeing’s defense, space, and security division. Together, their companies generated a staggering $110 billion in defense-related revenue last year.

Literature Review – Creativity and Passion

Kristen Hadeed is a young lady who owns a cleaning business called “Student Maid” that employs college students. Throughout her childhood, she “ran” many businesses which inspired her passion for service and leadership. In this TED talk “How to Retire by 20,”  Hadeed talks about the importance of creativity and failure as keys to success. She explains how creativity produces  passion and how failure is always an opportunity for evaluation and  improvement. This is very relevant in the LDP because we are encouraged to challenge the process using our creativity. We know that in the LDP, it is ok to fail – but only if we use those failures as a learning experience.
